John Buchan was born in Perth in 1875. He was educated at Hutchesons' Boys' Grammar School in Glasgow, and went on to scholarships at the Universities of Glasgow and Oxford. After graduation he produced a number of adventure novels.

His novel "The Three Hostages" appeared in 1924, and has twenty-one chapters.
