Olivier Messiaen was born in Avignon in 1908. In 1983 he gave us "Saint François d'Assise: scènes franciscaines", an opera in three acts (consisting of eight scenes).

Act 1 is given here as five separate files. To see subtitles do a right click once a dialogue has begun - there is a choice of six languages. English subtitles are on "track 5".

The password for each file is "again".

Acts 2 and 3 should appear here in a day or two's time.

Which performance is this? Would like to know before downloading...

It was performed by "De Nederlandse Opera" (which is to say "Dutch"), musical director Ingo Metzmacher, stage director Pierre Audi, set and lighting designer Jean Kalman, costume designer Angelo Figus, dramaturge Klaus Bertisch, the Hague Philharmonic orchestra, the Chorus of De Nederlandse Opera, chorus conductor Martin Wright, tele-vision director Misjel Vermeiren. It appears to have been broadcast on the tele-vision on 31 July 2013.

I hope you enjoy it. If you are not sure you can of course try it just one file at a time.

Ah, so it is the same as this DVD:

https://www.amazon.de/Olivier-Messiaen-Saint-Francois-dAsisse/dp/B001RE9HGQ

By the way, this was by no way a good performance (musically mediocre, production destroying any atmosphere) and does this great opera no good.

... it should not be posted here....

There the member is in error. Our forum was founded in 2009 and has never had such a condition, and never will have. A few years ago a Scotch member attempted to impose rules of his own invention and practically destroyed the forum in the process, so it is a serious concern.

Let me repeat it twice more, so that it well and truly sinks in to the minds of all our members:

Our forum was founded in 2009, it has never had such a condition, and never will have.

and again:

Our forum was founded in 2009, it has never had such a condition, and never will have.
