César Franck was born in Liège in 1822.

The basis of Franck’s thematic material is the symphonic phrase, a paradoxical compound of rhetorical and passive elements which is paralleled linguistically by Jean-Aubry’s (1916) description "serene anxiety". Often Franck developed complex phrase structures using a kind of mosaic of variants of one or two germinal motifs.

His piano quintet in F minor came out in 1879. It has three movements:

I. Molto moderato quasi lento - Allegro
II. Lento, con molto sentimento
III. Allegro non troppo ma con fuoco

Here the performers were the Bolshoi Theatre String Quartet:

Isaak Zhuk
Boris Weltman
Maurice Gourvich
Isaak Bouravsky

with Sviatoslav Richter on the piano.
