Arnold Schoenberg
Frühlings Tod [The Death of Spring] (symphonic poem after Nikolaus Lenau, 1898, unfinished)
   Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra
   Riccardo Chailly, conductor [broadcast, 1985]

one MP3 file (including intro & outro)

Actually, quite a bit more than a fragment, almost ten minutes long. Gorgeous late Romanticism, predating Verklaerte Nacht and Gurrelieder. Sadly, it ends very abruptly -- a great shame it wasn't completed but at least we have the opportunity to hear what there is.

Thumbs up from yours truly! Many thanks, Maris.

Yes, Maris, it's absolutely gorgeous. Thank you very much. It seems odd to me that what survives is in such a state of completion; there must have been a short score and sketches from which Schoenberg produced this fully-orchestrated torso; unless, of course, he composed directly into full score, which I guess is possible, although unlikely, I'd have thought. I wonder where this MS was found...
