I think César Franck's eerie Symphony could well benefit from the inclusion of one of those! Who was it is complained that the presence of the cor anglais was un-symphonic? Since it hadn't been invented in 1888, we had to wait until that other master of creepy music, Messiaen, could take advantage of it!
