I just find it (perhaps moderately) interesting to identify those composers of the same age or even generation who developed their musical idiom along similar or radically different lines.

1936  John White

And how could I have forgotten him?
Indeed!

And (subject to whether the list complier would think of him as British), there's also a certain Kaikhosru Shapurji Sorabji that we've both forgotten to mention!

"van Dieran" should read "van Dieren" and there's a superfluous "r" in "Victor Hely-Hutchinson", by the way (a pedant writes).

1883: Lord Berners
1894: Peter Warlock

"Contemporary" seems to be something of an issue, though, if the list is to include composers born 146 years ago!

Can we continue to regard Gerard Schurmann as British? Born in the former Dutch East Indies of Dutch parents he grew up in Britain but moved to the USA in 1981 and has been domiciled there ever since. It is a moot point I suppose and I am happy to include him if others are of that opinion.

I have added several composers to the list. I shall add others once I have familiarised myself with them. As a self-confessed "old fogey" some of the names are new to me. My lamentable ignorance no doubt Embarrassed Grin
