Good points! No zipping & unzipping! No arduous changing of file formats, driving me mad! Or waiting for my puny pc & internet connection to download a file! Just press 'Record' & 'Play' & hope for the best!  ::) ;D And RIP Lou Ottens, incidentally! (1926-1921).

And RIP Lou Ottens,incidentally! (1926-1921).

Hear Hear! It was only the creativity of of Mr Ottens that would allow Tracy Barlow to go upstairs one day in 1983 'to play cassettes' and remain there unseen for the following 14 years.

Yes. They are in the British and Irish Music Archive -  see post number one in the British and Irish Music thread on the Downloads (by nationality) board.

Note to moderator: Please move this post if it gets in the way of discussion and would be better elsewhere.Thanks.

Here is a list of British and Irish works that I have noted are on the Internet archive(archive.org) (Miklos Pogonyi Archive), which I  don’t think are available in any other format (except where marked) at the moment. I could well be wrong. Just because the work is named doesn’t mean it’s available, although I believe most are (because I’ve listened to them!). Apologies if you see one you want, and ultimately it either isn’t there or is otherwise marked ‘unavailable’’private’ or something similar. Finally, there may be many more out there I haven’t noticed yet! However, it may be a useful index to add to the forum’s own archive.

Denis ApIvor - Sym 2, Neumes, Overtones, Violin Con, 4tet 1 (poor recording) 2 (disc marked ‘ApIfer’) Track marked 4tet 3 is not by the composer. 2 acts from opera Yerma (Act One missing?).
Seoirse Bodley - Symphony No.3, Metamorphoses on the name ‘Schumann’.
Brian Boydell - Symphony for Strings, Jubilee Music
Alan Bush - Symphony No. 3 ‘Byron’ – much better recording than in archive, sung in English (rather than in German (original) on the other recording in the AMF archive). Other works in archive: Suite of Six (4tet), Suite for 2 pianos.
Arthur Butterworth – Sym No. 3 (better version than in AMF archive), The Nightwind, Night Flight for brass, Caliban for brass
John Casken - Erin (double bass and cham orch), Tableaux des Trois Ages
Francis Chagrin - Dialogue for Piano and Orch, Romanian Fantasy for Harmonica and Orch.
Peter Maxwell Davies - The Seas of Kirk Swarf, Shakespeare Music, Epitaph
David Dorward - Concerto for winds and percussion, Sinfonietta
David Ellis - Sym 2, Sinfonietta
John Maxwell Geddes - Lacuna
Iain Hamilton (listed as ‘Ian’) - Aurora, Scena- Cleopatra, Circus for two trumpets and orch,  Vers Apollinaire
Edward Harper  - Sym 1, Elegy, Intrada, Seven Poems by ee cummings,
Alun Hoddinott  - Sinfonietta No. 4, Triple Concerto, Opera - The Rajah’s Diamond, Piano Quintet, Five Orchestral Studies, Trombone Concerto,  Opera- The Beach at Falesa (Act 3 missing, so incomplete??) Oratorio – Job
Trevor Hold – Symphony No.1
Robin Holloway - Three Idylls, Bassoon Con, Double Con for cl and sax, Ballad for harp and orch, Ode for four winds and strings, Scenes from Schumann.
Wilfred Josephs  -  Sym 2, Concerto a dodeci, Oratorio-Mortales, Night Music, Octet, Sonata for Brass Quintet, Oboe Quartet
John Joubert -  In Memoriam, Symphonic Study
Geoffrey King - Man Dancing
John Kinsella - Violin Concerto No.1
Jonathan Lloyd - Sym 3, Viola Concerto, Waiting for Gozo
Elisabeth Lutyens - Music for Orch (no.1), Rondel,  Akapotik Rose,  Cantata -De Amore (these have recently been uploaded to YT), Fleur du Silence, Rape of the Moone.
Steve Martland  - Babi Yar
Edward McGuire  - Glasgow Symphony, Euphoria
John McLeod - The Seasons of Dr Zhivago (Symphonic Song Cycle)
David Morgan – Reflections and Meditations, Sinfonia da Requiem, Partita, Con for Wind
Dominic Muldowney (listed as ‘Dominick’) Thee Pieces for Orchestra, Trumpet Con, Percussion Con (Piano and Sax Cons on LP?)
Alasdair Nicolson - Dansmusik
Nigel Osborne - Violin Con, Fantasia for 11 instruments
Anthony Payne - The Period of Cosmography, Windows on Eternity, Con for Orch.
Anthony Powers - Terrain
Priaulx Rainier - Violin Con ’Due Canti e Finale’ – far better quality than the recording  which I uploaded.
Edwin Roxburgh - Oratorio The Rock, Montage
Reginald Smith-Brindle  - Homage to HG Wells, Guitar Con (better recording than mine?)
Patric  Standford - Sym 5
Christopher  Steele - Six Tuner Paintings, Organ Concerto (see ‘Steel’)

One of the items in the archive is shown as incomplete - Hoddinott's opera The Beach of Falesa - but in fact the missing Third Act is to be found listed elsewhere in the Pogonyi archive on a separate 'tape' or transfer. It is interesting to note that this appears to be a different performance from the recording extracts of which I provided for the AMF archive a decade or more ago. Mine was taken from the BBC radio broadcast, but there had been an HTV television transmission some days earlier (and indeed I had highlighted the excerpts I wished to record from both that telecast and an earlier live performance). I suspect that the new and complete version in the Pogonyi archives was taken from that HTV transmission, both on the grounds of sound, some discrepancies in the sung notes, and what I think sounds like an editing join before Geraint Evans's concluding monologue in the last Act (I was told at the time that there had to be a pause in the television recording at that point on technical grounds - too much smoke emerging from the exploding temple).

I agree that there are some very valuable and unique recordings in the adventurous Miklos Pogonyi archive, and that of Alan Bush's Byron Symphony for example is a vast improvement on the existing recording quite apart from being sung in English rather than German (although the first performance was in the latter language). One wonders how many other private archives are out there with rare and unusual items lurking in their depths?

Many thanks to Latvian for the following works by Malcolm Arnold, including several premieres* - all the series are now represented in the archive in off-air recordings (including nos. 1-6 in wonderful broadcasts under Rumon Gamba). One of the most significant symphonic cycles by a composer of any nationality...

Symphony No.2, Op.40 (1953)
BBC Welsh O/ Malcolm Arnold (br. 21/10/1971)

Symphony No.3, Op.63 (1957)
RLPO/ John Pritchard (br. 1958)

Symphony No.4, Op.71 (1960)*
BBC SO/ Malcolm Arnold (br. 2/11/1960)

Symphony No.5, Op.74 (1961)
BBC Northern SO/ Malcolm Arnold (br. 1/5/1966)

Symphony No.6, Op.95 (1967)*
BBC Northern SO/ Malcolm Arnold (br. 28/6/1968)

Symphony No.7, Op.113 (1973)
BBC SO/ Malcolm Arnold (4/10/1976, br. 16/3/1977)

Symphony for Brass, Op.123 (1978)
BBC SSO Brass/ Jerzy Maksymiuk (br.10/4/1986)

Symphony No.8, Op.124 (1978)*
Albany SO/ Julius Hegyi (br. 4/5/1979)

Symphony No.9, Op.128 (1986)*
BBC PO/ Charles Groves (br. 20/1/1992)

All are safely gathered in (though not necessarily free from sorrow or free from sin)...

My dear friend, thank you for this - what a catalogue you've listed! I'm not entirely sure how to access it, any pointers? Is it listen-only or downloadable?

They can be streamed and recorded. I use a program called Total Recorder which captures Internet streams very nicely, and then I edit them with another program called Audacity. The former can be purchased for a reasonable fee and the latter is free. I've also found it necessary to edit quite a few of the recordings from the Pogonyi collection as many are at a low volume and others have sudden variations in volume.

I got many recordings in this collection from Miklos himself. He was a friend for many years and we exchanged recordings frequently. As a matter of fact, quite a few items in his collection on Internet Archive came from me.

Maris already mentioned the most important facts, but for completeness, I should maybe recall an older discussion about this collection:
http://artmusic.smfforfree.com/index.php/topic,7100.0.html
Miklos's collection was just vast for sure. I also had the pleasure to exchange quite some stuff with him in his late years. In fact, Miklos still had a lot more, since all the tapes he had have not even been included by the archive guys.

Quite right, Holger! And you and I have fed each other's collections over the years as well!
