He composed orchestral, chamber, instrumental, choral and vocal music as well as works for the stage and folk ensembles. Among his unrecorded orchestral works are a Concerto for Piano and String Orchestra (1964), Violin Concertos Nos. 1 and 3 (1971) and a Cello Concerto (1959).

His 24 Preludes written in 1943 are available from First Step Records...were written in 1943 during the composer's evacuation to the Caucasys mountains from Minsk and reflect the emotions of composers during Hitlers invasion of Belarus.

2010 is the centennial of the birth of Petr Petrovich Podkovyrov. One of the first composition graduates of the Belarusian State Conservatoire in Minsk (in 1937), he studied composition with Vasily Andreyevich Zolotaryov, who himself had studied with Mily Balakirev and Anatoly Liadov and later with Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov. Thus Podkovyrov’s “compositional ancestry” can be traced to the 19th century group of Russian nationalist composers known as “The Five.”

During the Great Patriotic War (Russian term for World War II) Podkovyrov evacuated 1200 miles southeast from Minsk to Maikop in the Caucasus mountains. It was during this evacuation (1943-44) that he composed 24 Preludes. After the war he was invited to teach at the Belarusian State Conservatoire (now the Belarusian State Academy of Music).

24 Preludes stands as an example of vivid musical communication: although no titles or descriptions were given, the relation to the wartime experience is strongly evident. Podkovyrov communicates states of mind regarding the wartime experience, rather than depicting external events. His principal means are intense musical expression, concise formal structures, unusual tonal movements, and striking contrasts of expressive character and tonal relationships between successive preludes. The Preludes are all short (maximum two minutes).

The intended audience is all musical listeners, since this music is practically unknown outside Belarus, but has been found eminently attractive to audiences in the United States.
