The very welcome recent releases by Guild of the Kenneth Leighton and John McCabe Oboe Concertos (and by Toccata of the David Matthews Piano Concerto) reminds me of those concertos by Leighton and McCabe still awaiting a first recording.
These are:
(*= available for download from this site)
Kenneth Leighton:
Violin Concerto(1952): * Concerto for Viola, Harp, timpani and strings(1952): * Concerto for Two Pianos, timpani and strings(1954) Piano Concerto No.2(1960): * Concerto for Harpsichord, Flute and strings(1982)
John McCabe:
Violin Concerto No.1 "Sinfonia Concertante"(1959) Chamber Concerto for Violin and Cello(1965) Oboe d'Amore Concerto(1972) Piano Concerto No.3 "Dialogues"(1976/77) Violin Concerto No.2(1980): * Double Concerto for Oboe and Clarinet(1987/88): * Horn Concerto "Rainforest IV"(2006): * Cello Concerto "Songline" (2007): *
We are indeed fortunate to have a number of these in our British Music Catalogue but I would suggest that several of these concertos are crying out for a commercial recording, especially the Leighton Violin and Second Piano Concertos and the two McCabe Violin Concertos, Piano Concerto No.3 and Cello Concerto.
If Raphael Wallfisch can record the very early Cyril Scott Cello Concerto for Dutton surely someone can get him to record the McCabe (not to mention the Lennox Berkeley, Arnold Cooke, William Wordsworth, Daniel Jones ;D)
