One of the world's oldest civilized lands, Egypt occupies the northeast corner of Africa. It was a province of the Ottoman (Turkish) empire from 1517 to 1914, when it became a British protectorate. It became an independent kingdom in 1922 and a republic in 1953. In 1958 it joined Syria to form the United Arab Republic; this union was dissolved in 1961 but Egypt retained the U.A.R. name until 1971. Despite being mostly desert, its economy is agricultural, centred along the River Nile. Area: 386,000 square miles. Languages: Arabic, English and French. Capital: al-Qahirah (Cairo).
Monetary System: 10 Millim = 1 Ghirsh (Piastre)
Most coins issued before 1916 are similar to Turkish types but are distinguished by the Arabic word Misr (Egypt) on the reverse.
