Located on the Bay of Bengal between India and Siam, modern Burma was unified in the 1700's. The kingdom ended in 1886 with annexation to British India. It became a separate British colony in 1937, was occupied by Japan in World War II, and gained independence as a republic in 1948. An agricultural nation, it exports rice, lumber, rubber and ores. Area: 261,789 square miles. Languages: Burmese, English and many others. Capital: Mandalay (1857 to 1885), Rangoon (from 1886).
