British Honduras, on the Caribbean coast of Central America, was settled in the 1600's and prospered despite Spanish opposition. It was administered as part of Jamaica from 1862 to 1884, when it became a separate Crown colony. Upon independence in 1973 it took the name Belize. Until recent years forestry was the most important industry. Area: 8,866 square miles. Languages English and Spanish.

Monetary System: 100 Cents = 1 Dollar
