Brazil (Brasil) is the largest country in South America, covering over half the continent. From 1549 to 1822 it was a royal colony of Portugal. Brazil produces a wealth of tropical products including timber, rubber, fruit, cocoa, wax and much of the world's coffee. Vast mineral resources are being increasingly developed and industry is growing rapidly, with manufacturing comprising over sixty per cent of the total production.
