Mahler often used to say: "An artist shoots in the dark, not knowing whether he
hits or what he hits." Also: "There is only one education---example. To live by
example is everything." He was a foe to all explanations, wranglings and
gossiping. "I must keep on the heights. I cannot let anything irritate me or
drag me down. It is hard enough as it is to keep up on that level all the time."
