Excerpt:
The Chamber Symphony was completed in 1954. When Constantin Silvestri conducted the Romanian premiere of this work he told the audience that this, Enescu's greatest composition, was harder to understand than any of his other works because its musical language was so modern, and he therefore played it a second time in the same concert. There remains something oblique and distant about the Chamber Symphony which makes it one of Enescu's strangest and most personal creations.
