Excerpt:
The musical stave not only created a structure within which Western music could develop but also shows something other than just the sounds being made. It indicates how the various elements stand in relation to one another, how sound creates a space. It gives a pictorial representation of pitch. mapping out the high and low; it shows how different musical voices move against and through one another; it links the dimensions of pitch and time, and gives images to rhythm. The notation allowed harmony and counterpoint to develop as they did; it influenced the course of the art it proposed mutely to serve.
