I have to believe that Bennett is probably correct.) Title: Re: Belorussian Music Post by: guest377 on December 13, 2013, 04:30:56 am Anatoly Bogatyrev (1913 - 2003)

He studied at the Vitebsk Music School, the Minsk School of Music, and the Conservatory of Belarus where he was taught composition by Vasily Zolotarev, a pupil of Rimsky-Korsakov. He came to prominence while still in his twenties, being appointed chairman of the board of the Belarusian Union of Composers in 1938, and receiving the Stalin Prize in 1941. In 1948 he began teaching composition at the National Conservatory, Minsk, where he later became a deputy director. He joined the CPSU in 1954, and was made a People's Artist of the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic in 1968. Bogatyrev died in 2003. Bogatyrev's music is tonal with marked nationalist tendencies. His study of Belarusian folklore strongly influenced his music, not just in his folksong arrangements, but also in his choice sometimes to adopt modes and the rhythms of Belarusian folk music. He has been described as "one of the founders and leading representatives of the Belarusian school…Whether vocal or instrumental, his works are arresting for the richness of their melodies and for their polyphonic textures." Twenty-Four Preludes (1943) Ron YaDeau, piano Source: out of print LP 2010 is the centennial of the birth of Petr Petrovich Podkovyrov. One of the first composition graduates of the Belarusian State Conservatoire in Minsk (in 1937), he studied composition with Vasily Andreyevich Zolotaryov, who himself had studied with Mily Balakirev and Anatoly Liadov and later with Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov. Thus Podkovyrov’s “compositional ancestry” can be traced to the 19th century group of Russian nationalist composers known as “The Five.” During the Great Patriotic War (Russian term for World War II) Podkovyrov evacuated 1200 miles southeast from Minsk to Maikop in the Caucasus mountains. It was during this evacuation (1943-44) that he composed 24 Preludes. After the war he was invited to teach at the Belarusian State Conservatoire (now the Belarusian State Academy of Music). 24 Preludes stands as an example of vivid musical communication: although no titles or descriptions were given, the relation to the wartime experience is strongly evident. Podkovyrov communicates states of mind regarding the wartime experience, rather than depicting external events. His principal means are intense musical expression, concise formal structures, unusual tonal movements, and striking contrasts of expressive character and tonal relationships between successive preludes. The Preludes are all short (maximum two minutes). http://www.mediafire.com/listen/ei65u19d1cry3rl/Podkovyrov_24%20Preludes.mp3 Title: Re: Belorussian Music Post by: guest377 on January 06, 2014, 05:04:12 am Eduard Zaritsky (1946 - )
