That would be much more appropriate for my current state of decrepitude. Like Gigi in the wonderful Learner and Lowe musical, I seem "to have gone from puberty to senility without a stop on the way."

Hey, there's a bank-holiday comin' up: she's off to Florrie's.

Thanks Albion, for this, hadn't really realized what it was when you started, but now that I am "in" it is a daily must, it's surely an interesting way to look up and if lucky, meet the music of some composers new to me. Keep up the good work, you are great.

He apparently had an accomplice in that act of butchery in the person of one Modest Tchaikovsky and so one shouldn't hold him entirely to blame! He also produced that lovely ear-worm Serenade in his own ballet, Les millions d'Arlequin, so beguilingly played by James Galway on this album, which I have in its LP form:

Dodecaphonic comedies are somewhat of an acquired taste, one might think. No doubt Claude-Michel Schönberg has been laughing all the way to the bank to deposit his royalities from The Glums; I bet he's made more spondulicks than Arnold ever did.

Very droll! ;D Whatever else Erwartung might be, it certainly isn't a laugh but it is worthy of respect and so it isn't a joke in either sense! The plot reads like the opening sequence of an episode of Criminal Minds. To say that Arnold Schoenberg was among the more earnest composers would be putting it at its lowest!

It's difficult, isn't it? I know logic states we should try to separate them but I'm not sure that I can: I feel that somehow I might find Wagner's music much more palatable if he hadn't held such loathsome views. I'm sure lots of composers whose music I appreciate had some unfortunate attitudes or habits but I find racism/antisemitism impossible to disregard. One can even overlook Gesualdo's little indiscretion which was, after all, a crime passionnel.

It's probably an egregious fault in my personality, but I've never had this problem. To me Wagner's music is Wagner's music, Orff's music is Orff's music, Riefenstahl's films are Riefenstahl's films...

Oh no, no-one could repair Fanny Cradock; she is (and always was) beyond all hope of benefit from human intervention; but I'm happy to say that the engineer did manage to repair my boiler (which actually looks not too dissimilar to that in the above photograph)!

Alas, I am also beyond redemption (the warranty ran out decades ago). I rejoice to hear that your boiler is in a more blessčd condition...

I simply wouldn't have the Patience, although I would adopt the same technique with clotted cream.

Oh yes. The word "indomitable" might have been coined just to describe her! And I do like larger dogs, such as that pictured with Dame Ethel; they're much preferable to those miniature breeds that look like a cross between a rat and a lavatory brush. ;D (Cairn terriers are all right though, he added quickly, in deference to Mina).

Ah! My favourite piece of Glazunov's!

And the symphonies are damn fine as well! My favourite recordings are Jose Sebrier with the RSNO and Russian National on Warner.

You will not be astonished to learn that I have that set too (as well as Neeme Järvi's and Gennady Rozhdestvensky's, but I agree that Serebrier is best overall).

I know you're not keen on ballet, but Raymonda (1897-98) has some great music in it as well. The Naxos set conducted by Anissimov is excellent.

While I'm not keen on ballet, there's a lot of ballet music that I like, including Raymonda (although I only have the suite, also conducted by Serebrier). It's all that prancing about that I can't abide!  ;D

Yes, Iron Foundry (1926-27) is a seminal work, together with Prokofiev's equally decibel-busting Scythian Suite (1915-16) and Varčse's Amériques (1918-21, rev. 1927). Quite a trilogy...

Agreed. I have several recodings of both the Scythian Suite and Amériques. I once attended a concert at the RAH (don't ask me when) in which the Scythian Suite was programmed. I didn't know there were that many professional percussionists in London, and to have them all in once place...!

Fiendishly difficult and mind-blowing: I love his large scale choral works with their multiple choirs, such as the Missa Salisburgensis (Paul McCreesh), the Requiem and the Missa Bruxellensis (both Jordi Savall). Great stuff!

Ah-ha! You set a trap for the unwary: the music for that film about The Titanic, A Night to Remember was composed by the excellent William Alwyn; James Horner did the 1997 film Titanic.

Mmmmm, cheese, lovely cheese...

...which pretty much sums up James Cameron's talking-picture.

Near, far, wherever you are
I believe that the heart does go on.
Once more you open the door
And you're here in my heart
And my heart will go on and on and on and on and on...

The spirit of William McGonnagall clearly lingered on and on and on and on and on as well

 :P

a bit like the bloody film. I'd double-lock the door meself, turn off the lights and hide under the table.

I have to admit that I've never seen the thing and I've no desire to do so. I'm not much for films except for films noirs, with proper stars such as Joan Crawford, Barbara Stanwyck, Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart, Fred MacMurray, Claude Rains et al. They generally had scores by the Hollywood great too!

I prefer my fillums 1920s style: Stroheim, Lubitsch, Stiller, Sjostrom, Murnau, Lang, Pabst, Walsh, Ingram, Gance, Asquith, Eisenstein, etc. Silent cinema (which was never silent) at its brilliant best.

Blimey, and I thought I lived in the past! Seriously, though, the films you are interested in count as an art form and so I can understand the appeal (especially the gothic style of Murnau).

Indeed they are! I would recommend Silent Magic by Ivan Butler (Columbus Books, 1987) for an enthusiast's view (he saw them first-hand when they were mesmerising nitrate prints)...

Alas, many key titles by major directors are lost or survive incomplete: seen as ephemera in their day, curatorship was in its infancy. No doubt I'm a Celebrity will be preserved into the after-life and beyond, worra pile o' crap.

Likewise, so much art and music has been lost due to carelessness, the horrors of war and wanton destruction.

I don't really think Salieri poinsoned Mozart, do you? What little of his stuff I've heard is worthy but dull (especially when comparted to Mozart's!)

No, I'm sure it's just a bit of gratuitous, titillating, sensationalist fiction masquerading as musical history. Jolly good stuff, then...

Not wholly relevant but that reminds me of my late piano teacher Ronald Meachen who, at a cocktail party, was approached by a very pompous man who announced "Good evening. I am the Recorder of Norwich," to which Ron's immediate riposte was "Hello. I am the crumhorn of Wigan."

I'd be happy to wake up every morning if my clock-radio belted out the opening fanfare from Eric Coates's Calling All Workers (and then the rest of it). He was a true master whose music made the world a better and happier place. Ironic, really, when you look at a photograph of him; as I've noted here before, "he resembles nothing so much as an acidulous bank-manager":

It does, but nothing could be further from the truth, apparently. He was a lovely, warm-hearted man who liked nothing better than going to the Savoy Grill for supper with his wife, Phyllis, and then dancing the night away to one of the bands; or going to the Kit-Kat Club and dancing to the strains of Jack Hylton and his orchestra.

Whoops, she's lighted upon Sorabji now. Traffic lights taken out, pensioners misplaced due to lack of any discernible social interest, advertisements for missing cats adorning every lamp-post - is there no end to her mayhem? Lionel, as Secretary of State for Transport, sure 'tis a shoddy rigmarole, make no mistake.

Dear Lord, perish the thought!

Yep, Fantasia (1940) is a stunning achievement of technique and imagination - and great orchestral playing too.

Some days there's a dearth, some days a deluge. Could have been Beach, Meyerbeer, J.C. Bach or Fricker: a holiday snap of Blackpool circa 1976 may have sufficed - or, of course, some supernatural nun-fun (all in the best possible taste, of course)...

Extra emojis cost money, apparently.

For a nominal fee. AMF = Albion's Monetary Fund, though in this case it generally gets squandered on fripperies rather than bailing out incompetent and corrupt economies. I'd avoid the Darjeeling if I were you.

Yes, and Parker is far worthier of commemoration than that lout Fitzenhagen, whose butchered version of Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations still seems be preferred by the vast majority of cellists over the composer's own. What can they be they thinking about?  >:(

Hora novissima, Op.30 (1893) is an outstanding choral work which should be regularly performed: a new recording would be very welcome. I'd love to hear more of Parker's music, especially The Legend of St Christopher, Op.43 (1898)...

Agreed. Personally, I have a high regard for The Boston Six. The works of Arthur Foote, George Chadwick, Amy Beach and, of course, Edward MacDowell have done reasonably well in terms of good recordings in recent times but Parker and John Knowles Paine seem to have been left unfairly in the shadows somewhat. As for performances, however, I suspect that they are all under-represented on concert programmes, with the possible exception of Amy Beach's chamber music lately and MacDowell's second piano concerto. And To A Wild Rose of course!

Chadwick is wonderful, and we are lucky to have several excellent recordings of his orchestral music (Serebrier and Jarvi spring to mind). MacDowell seems to have dropped off the radar of late...
