Tālivaldis Ķenińš (1919-2008) - Sonata for Violoncello & Piano  (1950)

The movements: Allegro con moto ma non troppo - Scherzo / Presto assai - Andante molto sostenuto - Allegro molto
In 1951 Ķenińš, after studying in Europe (Olivier Messiaen) left for Canada, becoming a Canadian citizen in 1956. So I might have placed this in the Canadian folder, but decided for the Latvian, because of the work was written in 1950, before his Canadian time.

Atis Teichmanis, violoncello
Helmut Barth, klavier

http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?7bjiyie6bc9i27n (http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?7bjiyie6bc9i27n)

from lp Christophorus SCGLX 75980

Although he studied with Messiaen, he didn't follow the strict methods of his teacher. He himself says to be more influenced by the group 'Les Six', who created more playful music.
Later in his life, some musicologists say, the Parisian influence was always there.

The uploads of Kalsons violin concerto and concerto grosso seem to have gone missing.  Would it be imposing on anybody's good nature to ask if they could be uploaded again?

I tried them both just now, and they work for me. Was it a merely temporary disappearance, perhaps?

Volfgangs Darzins ( 25. 09. 1906 Riga - 24. 06. 1962 Seattle, Washington USA)    http://www.music.lv/Composers/Wolfgang_Darzins_e.htm

One of the most important Latvian composers, he was also a concert pianist, music critic, theoretician, ethnomusicologist and teacher. He was the son of the prominent composer Emils Darzins (1975 - 1910). He attended the Latvian State Conservatory’s piano class of B. Roga (1920) and the composition class of J. Vitols (l924), graduating with highest honors in 1929. He enrolled in the piano class of N. Karklina, graduating in 1934, performing at year’s end his Piano Concerto No. 1, later described as "technically erudite, pleasingly melodic and romantic". It was said to show the influence of Scriabin. His Piano Concerto No.2 was composed in 1938 and performed by the National Opera Orchestra under T. Reiters a year later. It showed the strong influence of folklore and the beginning of an individual style. Darzins also wrote a Latvian Dance Suite in three movements (l937). All of his published music was produced after l944. He developed a strong original style, influenced to some degree by Bartok and Stravinsky. His compositions are in three categories: piano, solo vocal and choral.

In 1928 he was invited to contribute reviews and articles on Riga’s musical life to the paper Latvis. From 1934 to 1940 he was music critic of the newspaper Rīts, and in 1940-41 for the newspaper Darbs. He was active as a music critic until l944, even continuing his writing in the Displaced Person camps later in Germany. In all he published more than 1000 articles. During this time he also became known for extensive research into Latvian folk music, mapping the distribution of many folksongs. He found as many as 23 variations of one song in a narrow area along the Baltic Sea. He dated the earliest Latvian dainas to the time of Christ and even earlier, tracing the language back some 3000 years. It is closely related to the ancient Sanscrit of Western India. The mass of folksongs had their beginnings in the 8th to the l5th centuries A.D.

In December,1939 he married the painter Anna Ozolins (Arthur Ozolins sister, my note), a graduate of the Latvian Academy of Arts. A daughter, Daina, was born in l953 after the couple had immigrated to the United States.

From 1944 until his death he livid in exile; till1950 in Eslingen (Germany), from 1950-55 in Spokane, Washington (USA) and from 1955 in Seattle. The Darzins’ emigration from the DP camps in Germany was sponsored by Grace Lutheran Church of Spokane, where he became choir director. He made several concert tours in the United States, including a Carnegie Hall concert in New York in 1954. His programs featured Chopin and Beethoven, often including his own works as well.

Also in this period he became close friends with three of his students, friendships that continued until his death: Kenneth Benshoof, composer-pianist later on the music faculty of the University of Washington; Alden Andreassen, tenor, and his wife, Myrtle Estelle, his piano accompanist. The Andreassens began performing Darzin’s songs in memorial concerts after 1962, which led eventually to two recordings. These three made the only LP records of Darzins’ music known to exist; Benshoof a recording of Darzins’ piano works (l955 –1960), the Andreassens a two-record set of Latviesu Tautas Dziesmas, Darzin’s arrangements of 38 dainas (in Latvian), including six of the eight through-composed songs (published by A. Kalnajs, Mannheim, in 1948). The other songs are from the collection of 200 set by Darzins (published by Kalnajs, Chicago, in 1966).

(Seattle's connection to Rimsky-Korsakov thru Vitols, my note)

Born Feb. 1 (13), 1877, in Kaunas; died June 12, 1947, in Riga. Latvian composer and conductor; Honored Art Worker of the Latvian SSR (1945). Brother of the composers Jekabs and Janis Medins.

In 1896, Medins graduated from the Riga Music Institute, where he studied violin, cello, and piano; he then became a teacher and director of the institute. He was a member of orchestras in Riga and was later a conductor in the Riga Latvian Theater (1906-11) and the opera house in Baku (1916-22). From 1922 to 1925 he was concertmaster and conductor of the Latvian Opera (Riga). From 1945 to 1947 he taught piano at the Latvian Conservatory, becoming a professor in 1946.

Some info about Arthur Ozolins:

International attention focused on Canadian pianist Arthur Ozolins more than thirty-five years ago when The New Yorker heralded his emergence as "one of the great virtuosos of our time'".

His training on three continents has produced a musician keenly attuned to the cultural and stylistic idioms in repertoire ranging from baroque to contemporary. Audiences and critics around the world applaud his unique fusion of romantic ardour and uncommon clarity of thought.
A third generation pianist, Ozolins was born to Latvian parents in Lübeck. His studies began in Buenos Aires with his grandmother and mother, a pupil of Edwin Fischer. At the age of 13, he entered the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, studying first with Talivaldis Kenins and later Alberto Guerrero.

The following year, Walter Susskind invited Arthur Ozolins to make his debut with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO). Since that debut in 1961, Ozolins has appeared more than 50 times with the TSO and collaborated with it in numerous recordings. It was with this orchestra under the direction of Andrew Davis that Arthur Ozolins was first presented in the Kennedy Center and in Carnegie Hall.

Three of the pianist's teachers figure among the legendary pedagogues of the instrument in the 20th Century: Nadia Boulanger, Vlado Perlemuter and Nadia Reisenberg. It was the advice of the revered Pablo Casals that first guided the young musician to Paris. Returning to North America, Arthur Ozolins entered the Mannes College of Music in New York and graduated in 1967 with the distinction of having achieved the highest scholastic record in the history of the school.

Mr. Ozolins has performed with such orchestras as the Royal Philharmonic, Royal Liverpool and Hallé; the St. Petersburg (Leningrad), Stockholm and Oslo Philharmonics; and the orchestras of Montpéllier, Barcelona, Buenos Aires, Ulster and Taiwan. His American orchestral debut was with the St. Louis Symphony, replacing an ailing Leon Fleisher. In Canada he appears with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver Symphony and l’Orchestre de Montréal, among others.

For more than 40 years Arthur Ozolins has been at the heart of music making in Canada. He has recorded the complete concerti and Rhapsody on the Theme of Paganini of Rachmaninoff with Mario Bernardi and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra for CBC Records. The Los Angeles Times has called him 'Canada's leading virtuoso pianist.' Arthur Ozolins was recipient of the first Juno Award given in classical music. The Latvian government awarded Ozolins its Three Star Order award (2003), and its Grand Music Prize (2002). He has also recently been appointed as an Honorary Professor at the Latvian Academy of Music (2010).

To show that new music is alive, well and immensely lovely in Latvia:

Live from the Great Guild - Festival "Latvian New Music Days 2014" concert in National Choir "Latvia", Latvian National Symphony Orchestra and conductor Kaspars Adamsons
George Pelēcis Concert orchestra Endorphin Music (2011) (premiere) Indra Rise Concerto for Cello and Orchestra "Meditation of heaven and earth "
(premiere) Soloists - Eric Kiršfelds

To record for yourself, simply click time, if one doesn't work other usually does:

There is a third work following those two by Peteris Butans (Maira Asare, Paul Celan, Česlava Milos and Sergei Moreino poetry) "Stars and waters" storyteller, choir and orchestra (2012, premiere) which I decided not to record

Some more music from young Latvian composers from a concert

Santa Ratniece: Seventh Liepaja Concerto: Piano Concerto WP, Vestards Shimkus, pf, Liepaja Symphony Orchestra, Alvars Lakstigala

Andris Vecumnieks: Fifth Liepaja Concerto: Concertino Art-i-Shock, Guna Aboltina, cello, Agnese Eglin, pf, Elena Endzele, perc, Liepaja S O, Alvars Lakstigala

I'm not sure why they are named the way they are, perhaps the Liepaja has a concerto-commissioning ability or something. I enjoyed them a lot

Jānis Mediņš (1890-1966)

from Letters to Peer Gynt [song cycle on poems by Elza Ķezbere] (1943) --

    Second Letter

  Aira Rurane, soprano
  Latvian National Symphony Orchestra
Eivinds Adlands, conductor [live, Oct. 27, 2004]

    Fourth Letter

  Laima Andersone, soprano
  Latvian National Opera Orchestra
Ernests Tons, conductor [live, Sep. 29, 1966]

From Latvian Radio broadcasts, never issued commercially. I originally uploaded these recordings a couple of years ago on this forum, but it was only recently pointed out to me that I never posted information on the music and performers, so I've added the details above and reposted the link. I also re-edited one of the files after discovering it was defective, so you may want to re-download for a better copy.

If there is interest, I'll see if I have recordings of the other two Letters. My files aren't clear in identifying which sections of this work are in my collection, so I'll need to do some investigation. The entire cycle has never been commercially recorded.

Incidentally, the Latvian poet Elza Ķezbere, who wrote the cycle of poems on which Mediņš based his work, was one of the best-loved modern Latvian poets among emigre Latvians (her verse was banned in Soviet Latvia during the Soviet years). She died only three years ago in New York City at the age of 100. I had the pleasure of meeting her a few years earlier, after having enjoyed her poetry for many years. A charming and gracious lady!
