Famous violinists and their teachers

There was a very interesting program on Russian Television about Pytr Stolyarovsky: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyotr_Stolyarsky

He trained so many talented violinists and his influence is felt even today. He wanted to be a virtuoso, and even played for A Rubinstein when he visited Odessa (his mother lived there). Later the Soviet government appreciated his teaching and they built music school for him (it was named after him). In  gratitude he said - "Thank you to comrade Koganovich and the rest of big wigs" (Stalin being present). But Stalin decided to overlook that and clapped. Koganovich was a member of the Politburo.

He died of a heart attack after being told that his beloved school was destroyed during the WW2.

This is my tribute to him and to Oistrach, Kogan and many others (I think  Heifitz studied with him too before going to the conservatory).

Wherever you go in Europe, the front desk violinists these days are often Russians. Stolyarsky's legacy is something all music-lovers can share - the technique, and the way of teaching, has made a huge contribution to the way orchestras play today :)
