Petr Podkovyrov  (1910-1977)

Twenty-Four Preludes  (1943)
Ron YaDeau, piano

Source: out of print LP

2010 is the centennial of the birth of Petr Petrovich Podkovyrov. One of the first composition graduates of the Belarusian State Conservatoire in Minsk (in 1937), he studied composition with Vasily Andreyevich Zolotaryov, who himself had studied with Mily Balakirev and Anatoly Liadov and later with Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov. Thus Podkovyrov’s “compositional ancestry” can be traced to the 19th century group of Russian nationalist composers known as “The Five.”

During the Great Patriotic War (Russian term for World War II) Podkovyrov evacuated 1200 miles southeast from Minsk to Maikop in the Caucasus mountains. It was during this evacuation (1943-44) that he composed 24 Preludes. After the war he was invited to teach at the Belarusian State Conservatoire (now the Belarusian State Academy of Music).

24 Preludes stands as an example of vivid musical communication: although no titles or descriptions were given, the relation to the wartime experience is strongly evident. Podkovyrov communicates states of mind regarding the wartime experience, rather than depicting external events. His principal means are intense musical expression, concise formal structures, unusual tonal movements, and striking contrasts of expressive character and tonal relationships between successive preludes. The Preludes are all short (maximum two minutes).

Churkin, Nikolai Nikolaevich  (1869-1964)

Born May 9 (21), 1869, in the village of Dzhalal-Ogly (present-day Stepanavan, Armenian); died Dec. 27, 1964, in Minsk. Soviet composer and folklorist. People’s Artist of the Byelorussian SSR (1949).

Churkin graduated from M. M. Ippolitov-Ivanov’s composition class at the Tbilisi Music School in 1892. He worked as a music teacher from 1892 to 1914 in Baku, Kaunas, and Vilnius. He moved to Byelorussia in 1914 and lived in Minsk from 1935. Churkin collected musical folklore, including more than 3,000 examples of Byelorussian folk music and dances, many of which were published in collections in 1910, 1949, and 1959.

Churkin was the first to attempt a Soviet Byelorussian opera, The Liberation of Labor (1922), and he originated national genre symphonic music, for example, Byelorussian Pictures (1925). His other works include the children’s radio opera The Mitten (1940) and the musical comedy Song of Berezina (1947). He also wrote works for symphony orchestra, wind orchestra, folk-instrument orchestra, and instrumental chamber ensemble (including 11 quartets), as well as choral works and songs set to the words of Soviet poets.

Churkin was awarded three orders and several medals.
