For those of you symphony lovers out there, here's a list compiled by a member here, ttle (by no means complete, but that would be practically impossible!) of symphony composers, which includes some pretty obscure and prolific symphonists. Just reading through this list makes you sigh, "So many symphonies, so little time" ;D!

Part 1 (composers A-D): ttle.perso.neuf.fr/Symphonies/symphonistes_a-d.htm
Part 2 (composers E-J): ttle.perso.neuf.fr/Symphonies/symphonistes_e-j.htm
Part 3 (composers K-O): ttle.perso.neuf.fr/Symphonies/symphonistes_k-o.htm
Part 4 (composers P-Z): ttle.perso.neuf.fr/Symphonies/symphonistes_p-z.htm

Apologies if the links don't work! If you wish, you can access each part of this list from the links found on the Wikipedia article titled "Symphony".

A truly marvellous list, packed with useful information! Many thanks to Thanh-Tâm and Kyjo. (I have edited the post simply to make the four links "clickable.")

Very useful indeed but needs some updating with the death dates of composers no longer with us; a good start would be to check those who appear to be over 100 years of age but whose names are neither Elliott nor Carter!

There are times when it's nice not to be on a list...

Very interesting indeed. Just something small on the Roy Harris entry. The 13 numbered symphonies is correct, but there are 3 unnumbered symphonies, the Symphony for Voices, the Symphony for Band and the early unpublished Symphony - American Portrait making a total of 16. There are also four incomplete symphonies, the very early Symphony - Our Heritage, American Symphony (for Jazz Band) and two vocal/choral symphonies on words of Whitman, one movement of which became Give Me the Splendid Silent Sun.

How would Penderecki's symphonies be numbered since there is no No. 6?  It bugs me that there is a No. 7 and 8 since those should be No. 6 and 7.

Penderecki has stated in several interviews that he wants to finish his No. 6. But he has so many plans for the future...

So there is clearly a Symphony No. 6 by Penderecki, and so designated by the composer himself. It is not finished yet (and perhaps never will be since the composer is now 83), so needs to be listed simply as: "Symphony No. 6 (unfinished)".

No, no, no. I have composed 4 symphonies.  3 of which I would say are juvenilia with one symphony fully scored.  But I have plans for 12 symphonies.  You are saying that if I die now, the twelve should be listed as unfinished since in my head I know what I want to write but haven't written a note of it down?  Bogus.  Penderecki hasn't started his NO. 6.  It is only in his head but nothing is written down.

I think you should tell Mr Penderecki that his behavior is unacceptable.   ;D

There is nothing to stop someone writing a piece and putting on the title page "Symphony No. 485". There is no law that you must have written 484 other symphonies first.
