Alban Berg (1885-1935)

Passacaglia (1913)

Prepared in 1999 by Christian von Borries

Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra
Cornelius Meister, cond.

Radio broadcast of a live performance

http://www.mediafire.com/?n52k2ysofb39pb4

Colin didn’t list recordings in his Berg worklist, probably because there are so many of each work. There is at least one commercial recording of the Passacaglia fragment on a Chandos disc. The liner notes don’t claim this to be a premier recording, a claim made about the concert aria “Der Wein” which exists in numerous recordings, perhaps a mistake.

Here is Franz Schmidt's Phantasiestück for piano and orchestra, performed - for the very first time - at a public concert on the tenth of this month. The broadcast sound quality was sort of average: sample rate 44100 Hertz and bit rate 112 kb/s. - And as has now been pointed out to me, this first link has about 3 seconds of sound missing:

https://www.mediafire.com/?2x4ivxvihbss4dv

So . . . here is a replacement: the complete work, without the 3-second glitch. The only problem is that it comes from the "On Demand" web-page, and so the bit rate is reduced to 96 kb/s:

https://www.mediafire.com/?27xvp9h3auxu1c8

The choice is yours. The broadcast was spotted by member Shamus. Further information here:

Franz Schmidt (1874 to 1939)

Here's a fine video of a concert given on the twenty-sixth of September at the Leipsic Gewandhaus. The major item - following Rachmaninoff's popular second concerto from 1901 - is Franz Schmidt's tremendous Second Symphony in E flat from 1913. The conductor was Semyon Bychkov and Kirill Gerstein played the piano-forte.

Franz Schmidt was born only one year later than Sergei R. His Second Symphony is among the best symphonic literature composed prior to the great war, and is worthy of comparison with (i.e. just as good as) anything by R. Strauss and G. Mahler.
