Dezider Kardoš was born in the village of Nadlice (Slovakia) in 1914.

Under Moyzes’s guidance, he mastered the use of modal chromaticism. The typical features of his music are ferocious vitality; Honegger-like motoric sections (where sharply rhythmical motifs play an important role in thematic work) in combination with meditative passages; and frequent use of the concertante style.

He left us eight grand symphonies (the last being a choral production) and four fine string quartets - regrettably the only one so far of which a performance is available is the second:

------

- String quartet no. 1 opus 3, 1936

------

- String quartet no. 2 opus 38, 1966

------

- String quartet no. 3 opus 49, 1978

------

- String quartet no. 4 opus 54, 1985

------

Please note also that his fourth symphony, nicknamed "The Piccola", opus 34 from 1962 is available in our archive.
