Nikos Skalkottas was born at Chalcis in 1904.

He persistently cultivated classical forms: variants of sonata, rondo, binary, and – particularly in earlier works – ternary form, within the traditional genres of suite, concerto, sonata, duo, trio and quartet, all generally in three movements. His music is characterized by a strong motoric drive, a kind of baroque energy shared by other contemporary composers such as Hindemith and Honegger. And of course much of it is "atonal" wth some delightful clusters thrown in.

He gave us four string quartets, from the years 1928, 1929 (now lost), 1935 and 1940.

Here is his third quartet, from 1935. There are three movements:

1. Allegro moderato
2. Andante
3. Allegro vivace

The work was performed by the New Hellenic quartet:

Georgios Demertzis, violin I
Dimitrios Chandrakis, violin II
Paris Anastasiadis, viola
Apostolos Chandrakis, cello

And here is his fourth quartet, from 1940. It is one of the most extraordinary pieces of music - real music - that I have ever heard.

There are four movements:

1. Allegro molto vivace
2. Thema con variazioni
3. Scherzo. Presto
4. Allegro giusto

It too was performed by the New Hellenic quartet:
