Robert Gerhard was born in Valls in 1896, and settled in England in 1939.

During the 1950s, the legacy of Schönbergian serialism engendered an increasingly radical approach to composition which, by the 1960s, placed Gerhard firmly in the ranks of the avant-garde.

He finished four symphonies and two numbered string quartets.

------

- First string quartet (1955). There are four movements:

I. Allegro Assai
II. Con vivacita
III. Grave
IV. Molto allegro

Performed by the Kreutzer Quartet.

------

- Second string quartet (1962); there are seven movements.

It was performed by the Arditti quartet.
