I am interested in Dutton's description of the Arnell disc as "The Unnumbered Symphonies" :)
That is a strange title to give to this disc but one will have to wait until one can read the booklet notes to seek a justification. To call the film Suite "The Dagenham Symphony" is stretching Robert Simpson's definition of the symphony far, far beyond breaking point ;D ;D The 1938 Sinfonia-yes, probably-but if this is what Dutton are trying to do then what about the 1939 Symphony for Strings(unless of course the score for that student work is now lost ???)
I think that I should post my revised Arnell catalogue on here :)

I see Dutton has marked the Catoire Symphony as a World Premiere Recording.....it's not, as Melodiya recorded this work with Boris Khaikin conducting....
Now there's just one Catoire piece for orchestra left waiting to be recorded, his symphonic poem Mtsyri.....

Received my copies today, and very impressed so far. The Brian concerto is a better recording than the Marco Polo version, I feel. The Bush symphony is rather wonderful and the Bax very lyrical. One of the best selections in a while, I'd say.

I agree that this Dutton batch is the best for a long time :) It neither recycles music previously available nor indulges in the "easy, second-rate" ;D
The Havergal Brian disc is quite superb-a better "Tinker's Wedding" than the Mackerras and a superb reading of Symphony No.13 with Brabbins apparently totally inside the Brian idiom, whilst the English Suite No.4 is absolutely delightful. Good to have the Bax Phantasy for Viola back on cd at last too. The best work ob the Bush cd for me is the splendid Dorian Passacaglia and Fugue. The Arnell works are not perhaps the equal of some of the Arnell we have previously heard but the Sinfonia was written when Arnell was still a student so one shouldn't perhaps expect too much.

I understand that Dutton considered the "Byron Symphony" and rejected the idea on the grounds of cost :( |

The Bax 'Phantasy for Viola and Orchestra' is six minutes faster than the only other recording on the deleted Conifer CD with Rivka Golani (soloist) and Vernon Handley conducting the Royal Philarmonic Orchestra. Theodore Holland's 'Ellingham Marshes' is a fine piece although the lyricalness of the Bax is hard to match in any other Viola Concerto I know by a British composer.
I hope the next batch of Duttons might include one or more of Stanley Bate's Violin Concertos. :o
