Josef Suk, born in the Bohemian village of Křečovice in 1874, was something of a late developer; he followed his own path in a steady, organic development from lyrical romanticism towards a complex polytonal musical language. He became, though, Dvořák’s favourite pupil, and in 1898 even married his daughter.
His sole piano quintet, opus 8, written in 1893, began as one of his early lyrical works, but it was revised in 1915. It is in G minor and has four movements:
1. Allegro energico 2. Adagio religioso 3. Scherzo. Presto 4. Finale. Allegro con fuoco
As performers were Pavel Štefan, piano, with the Suk Quartet.
