Thanks for the tip. Is it any good? I'm always curious to hear the compositions of conductors, especially those such as Furtwängler, who considered themselves composers first and conductors second or only be default. Other names which spring to mind are Paul Paray, Otto Klemperer, Paul Kletzki, Willem van Otterloo, René Leibowitz, Rafael Kubelík, Yevgeny Svetlanov, José Serebrier and so on. Many years ago my curiosity tempted me into buying an LP of Klemperer's 2nd Symphony and his 7th String Quartet. I listened to both pieces twice. Never again!

In my opinion, the 2nd symphony of Furtwangler is a near masterpiece and recorded splendidly by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Barenboim on Teldec (Warner) in 2002. The others are frightfully dull. So this is not a recording I shall be buying.

Gareth, as you well know "masterpiece" ain't in my vocab (having tired of the obsession with such branding on other forums), but I would never deny anyone's enthusiasms or terminology. Just ain't me!

 ;)

I must investigate old Furtwängler: Stokowski's Symphony (BIMA) is a corker! Any news on Carl Rosa?

I did say near masterpiece! It's an over used word, I agree.

Oh,good! Because I've often fancied buying Furtwangler's recording of Schumann's Fourth (I like his Schubert 9) and one of the DG releases pairs it with Furtwangler's Second, which I've read good things about. But I keep thinking,I could be sucked into more expense, because of all those Cpo releases! And I don't mind old recordings (I like 'em! :)).

Really, the problem has been that Furtwangler has not been well-served by his interpreters. The old Marco Polo 1st  is a good example of a good piece sounding bad when badly conducted. This new recording is much better.
