Previously, for some unknown reason, members were only "allowed" to send a very limited number of Personal Messages (PMs) per day. This restriction has now been removed and members are free to communicate with each other unencumbered by this arbitrary imposition: it is a forum after all.

Several members have reported to me about problems with personal messaging on the forum. Sometimes messages are not being sent and sometimes not saved to outboxes. This may be a technical glitch, or possibly it may be a new restriction imposed by admin. If the former is the case, such things happen. If the latter is the case, it is reprehensible and implies some kind of 1984 scenario where the moderator is reading your personal messages and deciding whether or not you are fit for purpose. As stated in my last post in this thread, PM means "Personal Message" - who cares if you're chatting about the price of eggs, the damp under your window-sill, who just won at Wimbledon or the present parlous state of "AMLF"? From long experience of egomaniac moderators over at UC, I would hate to see this forum go down the same puritanical path. I notice that the moderator here has now introduced a thread entitled "Unsuitable", presumably a place for him to dump posts before binning them - I xxxx well intend to fill that one up with my irrelevant rubbish...

The reason for the limit on personal messages, which was imposed about eight years ago, is to prevent unauthorised advertisers from flooding the forum.
I can increase the limit to ten per day if there are really enough people who want that.
Of course I have no way of reading people's personal messages and even if I could I would not want to.
But please note that this was never intended to be a forum for "chatting".
Secondly, more than one member has begun to write posts about lavatories. This is not a suitable subject for a serious forum about art-music and linguistics. Nor is it a suitable subject for polite society or for merry-making, even. That is why two such posts have been moved to the "unsuitable category".
