I found this, like the organ concerto, a well-structured piece and certainly more effective than the symphony. Maybe that just goes to prove that concertos are easier to write, given their inherent structural commonplaces of conflict and contrast between the soloist(s) and the orchestra. I thought Concerto doppio a witty title considering that it's a double concerto in two senses - a concerto for two instruments and a work structued around the idea of a serious section and a buffo section. The hints of Bartók in the slow section of the Concerto serio section were more convincing than the rather unsubtle echoes in the buffo part of the brilliant music Scott Bradley wrote for the Tom & Jerry cartoons. However, all in all, a pleasant twenty minutes. Thank you again, Jolly Roger, for posting it.
