This year has seen the third issue in my cycle of 'epic scenes' based on The Silmarillion by J R R Tolkien, The Children of Húrin. Earlier releases (all two-CD sets) have been The Fall of Gondolin and Beren and Lúthien, and releases of Fëanor and The War of Wrath are scheduled for the next two years to bring the recording to completion. The whole cycle will constitute over eleven hours of music, and the texts are all by Tolkien and used with the permission of the estate. The recordings feature artists from Welsh National Opera.

For some years the cycle has been promoted as the largest-scale continuous musical work written in Wales in the twentieth century, but I would be interested to hear of any challengers to that claim. In Britain as a whole Boughton's Arthurian cycle (where the final two operas remain unperformed) also extends over five evenings, but is I think somewhat shorter; the individual constituents of Holbrooke's Mabinogion cycle are longer, but only extend over three evenings (and Wagner's Ring is of course on a larger scale in every sense).

Prima Facie Records and Volante Opera have produced a number of illustrated talks in association with the releases:
