Last night I was in Glasgow to hear a concert given by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under Martyn Brabbins. The programme was Stravinsky's Symphonies for Wind Instruments, Mark Anthony Turnage's "Martland Memorial" with Colin Currie, and the Shostakovich Symphony No.10. The whole concert is available on You Tube through BBC Streaming-although I fear perhaps not to those outside the UK. The Shostakovich was breathtaking! It is of course one of the greatest of 20th century symphonies but the orchestra played it to the very edge of that sense of almost hysterical, "playing as if their very lives depended on it" brilliance which had me absolutely gripped, smiling broadly and barely able to sit still. Absolutely fantastic!!

Thanks for the heads-up about this YouTube relay - which I would otherwise have missed!

I am enjoying the Martland tribute at the moment - with the DSCH still to come.

It's a pity you missed the Glasgow FIERY ANGEL last year - those who were there said it captured the full intensity of that astonishing score.
