I listened to a few things on YouTube.  They sounded a lot like John Ireland.

The name is not completely unfamiliar, simply because many moons ago as a schoolboy I'd heard an oboe sonata of his performed by his widow, Janet Craxton - this would have been 1979 or so, I believe. Craxton herself would sadly die not long afterwards.
