New release for mid-october https://www.naxos.com/catalogue/item.asp?item_code=8.573888 Wonder why Naxos issues this, the same program is available on a Marco Polo disc from the 1990s https://www.naxos.com/catalogue/item.asp?item_code=8.223498

Surely it is simply just Naxos reissuing on their cheaper label a cd previously issued (but no longer available) on their more expensive Marco Polo label. They do this all the time.

I thought so too but it seems the orchestra and conductor are different on the new issue.

Careless of me! I apologise for not reading the initial post more carefully :(

Which leaves the original question still unanswered.

This has to be one of the most baffling, pointless, and needlessly redundant releases ever! The music is pleasant and enjoyable, but Lockhart's earlier recording is perfectly adequate.

If someone outside Naxos financed this recording and Naxos is simply releasing it for them, all well and good. But the question remains, why would someone go to the trouble of spending time and money duplicating a relatively obscure existing release (which couldn't have been a huge seller), and do they really expect to turn a profit on the venture? Or is this a vanity project of some sort?

Naxos recently released cycle of Brahms Symphonies with the renowned Gyor Philharmonic (that we were all quizzical over) might be a somewhat parallel case.
