Has anyone here heard the music of Stjepan Šulek? I was listening to the fourth symphony of Stanley Bate on You Tube and his 8th symphony came up next. I was very surprised, he is inventive and has some life to him, albeit first half of the 20th century. Any recommendations?

All Sulek's eight symphonies have been recorded and are available for download on iTunes, and they are also on YouTube. I would recommend numbers 3 to 6 - especially 5 and 6. The sound quality of the set is rather variable, and can be thin or harsh at times, which doesn't always make for easy listening. It would be good to hear the symphonies played by a modern orchestra with decent sound. There is a previous thread in this forum: http://artmusic.smfforfree.com/index.php/topic,4234.0.html

Agree with djarvie's recommendations entirely. For me No.6 stands out as most compelling followed by No.5, and then Nos.3&4.

I love Sulek's music and the more I listen to it the more it fascinates me. The Sixth is not only my favorite of his symphonies but one of perhaps a half-dozen favorite pieces of music in general.
THe Fifth and Eighth Symphonies are the more interesting of his other symphonies for me. He also wrote a series of four Classical Concertos which I've come to know more recently and the first is particularly engaging.
I've only found a brief snippet of his opera on Shakespeare's "Tempest," and would love to hear (and ideally see) the entire work.

Thank you one and all. I'm looking forward to hearing more Sulek. I'll try the 6th next.

A thoughtful summary and analysis. Andrew, the author, is a friend who lives only a few miles from my home. We had a good discussion after his article was posted.
