Interview with the Director of the National Latvian Symphony Orchestra (Andris Poga) regarding the new release of
VOLFGANGS DĀRZIŅ (1906-1962): Piano Concerto No. 2, JĀNIS IVANOVS (1906-1983): Symphony No. 20
Description: Unlike his great compatriot Ivanovs, Dāriņ was open to influnces from modernists like Debussy and Scriabin while as a person he was rather less intense, at least in this concerto from 1938. As the review in MusicWeb International puts it, Dārziņ' blithely romantic and carefree Second Piano Concerto moves between Delian warmth (listen to the woodland warmth of the opening) and the sort of irresistible melody found in Scriabin's still undervalued Piano Concerto. It's an attractive and sumptuous work with pages striking parallels with de Falla's Nights in the Gardens of Spain. So heres your second really enjoyable Latvian piano concerto in two months! Reinis Zariņ (piano), Latvian National Symphony Orchestra; Andris Poga.
