Some pretty exciting stuff from an unexpected source! The main attraction on this CD will be the Cello Sonata no. 2 in G major by Algernon Ashton, a composer who was often discussed on the other forum. It's a real shame his orchestral works have not survived, but there's no use for "if only" statements in this case, as they have pretty much been proven to have been destroyed in the Blitz :(. Also on this CD is the Cello Sonata in E-flat major and the Elegy by Samuel Liddle, a composer I have not heard of before. A more familiar composer (but still unsung), Charles Stanford, rounds out this attractive-looking disc with his Cello Sonata no. 2 in D minor. Definitely a must-buy for me ;D!
