This is a new release in the Naxos "American Classics" series. A worthy addition to your American composer collection. However, I think the performance is somewhat weaker than the Neeme Jarvi version on Chandos (the Chandos American Series). Hooray for Naxos for their promotion of American composers in this series. Thompson was an unsung composer with his vocal works perhaps his best (Frostiana and Requiem). For the budget price, Naxos continues to bring to the market many great composers.

An attractive Symphony, especially the final movement. As I already have the Chandos version and the Koch set - with Symphonies Nos. 1 & 3 - I'll pass on this one. However, I welcome Naxos releasing more CDs of American composers. :D I have several of their previous releases, but all are from several years ago.

same here.. it seems the volume of American classics releases has slowed a bit. Howard Hansen is still my favorite; glad that Naxos re released the Delos set that was out of print.

One of the great American symphonies -- original, colorful, witty, assertive, often engagingly jazzy. Bernstein's recording is still the greatest for me, but the others are fine and I look forward to hearing this new one.
