After first hearing this symphony sounds rather more French than Polish - but perhaps I am biased by some biographical details concerning Szalowski.

That's not so surprising, because there always was a strong link between France and Poland.
Mostly one direction though: many Polish composer went to France. In the years of the Iron curtain, many  composers were allowed to travel to France by the authorities, .

But you're absolutely right: much french air here.
