I received this cd a week or two ago and had intended to comment earlier.

John Pickard is, in my opinion, one of the most impressive composers around in the UK at present. The Symphony No.5 is excellent proof that a contemporary symphony can be powerful, gripping yet approachable and I recommend it with great enthusiasm. It is performed with due panache by the BBC NOW under Martyn Brabbins. The symphony was commissioned by John Grimshaw of the Havergal Brian Society (Pickard is a Brian fan himself, as of course is Brabbins).

Hats off to BIS for championing Pickard's music. Hopefully they can be persuaded to record the equally fine Symphonies Nos. 2 and 3 (No.1 has been withdrawn for revision and No.4 is already on cd).

Why Pickard is not performed at the London Proms I do not know. He should be!

I agree with your post but wasn't Pickard's No. 5 premiered at the Proms?  I heard it on the internet radio from that premiere performance.

Not unless the Proms have moved to Cardiff where the premiere took place in 2016

Is that necessary if the CD is a different (studio) performance?

But I suspect that it isn't. The BIS cd explicitly states that it is recorded in association with BBC Radio Three and in the BBC Hoddinott Hall in Cardiff in June 2016. It is therefore a reasonable assumption that what is on the disc is the performance broadcast.

Found the Pickard symphonies on Spotify - including this newest release - and hope to play them soon. Thanks for this tip; very helpful.

… music is not only an `entertainment’, nor a mere luxury, but a necessity of the spiritual if not of the physical life, an opening of those magic casements through which we can catch a glimpse of that country where ultimate reality will be found.  RVW, 1948
