Stjepan Sulek  (1914-1986)

Symphony No.5  (1964)

1. Andante sostenuto; Allegro; Andantino
2. Andante cantabile
3. Allegro assai; Lento; Allegro non troppo

Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra
Pavle Despalj, Conductor

Croation Radio Broadcast January 31, 2012

This symphony was kindly posted above by TTLE on UC but the third movement was flawed because
of a broadcast error and TTLE alerted me to the rebroadcast because of my interest in Sulek.
Therefore I am posting it again for those purists that want the complete symphony without the 5 second dropout.

Following wide popular request ;D :

Stjepan Šulek (1914-1986)

Violin Concerto (1951)
Allegro - Adagio - Finale: allegro vivace
Stjepan Šulek (violin)
Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra / Pavle Dešpalj
rec. 1960

Broadcast by Croatian Radio HR3 in 2008

http://www.mediafire.com/?8ia95g8ar792mre
http://www.mediafire.com/?16ta4q2hcjwg93t
http://www.mediafire.com/?bify2o99e1cfjoc

The sound quality is uneven, unfortunately, but this is still a splendid performance of a captivating work. Arguably, it remains one of Šulek's most direct tributes to the Romantic tradition (Beethoven, Brahms, Dvořák). It is also typically a "violinist's concerto", and one of the very best, for that matter. The central part has been particularly praised.

Since several forum members were interested in Bruno Bjelinski's symphonies, here are some of them. The quality varies from a file to another, one of them has quite a few hiccups and gaps unfortunately, but still one can hear what the music should sound like.

Bjelinski's music is not strikingly original, there are clear affinities with Prokofiev for instance, sometimes Poulenc as well. Yet, it is personal, easily recognizable, has a distinctive Mediterranean flavour. I find it often enticing, witty, ironic, heartfelt and definitely more profound that it may appear at first hearing.

Bruno Bjelinski (1909-1992)

Symphony No. 1 "Summer Symphony" (1955)
Allegro maestoso - Andante sostenuto - Allegro giocoso

Stjepan Šulek (1914-1986)
Concerto for organ and orchestra "Memento" (1974)
Fantasia - Illusione - Finale
Pavao Mašić (organ)
Croatian Radio Symphony Orchestra / Vladimir Kranjčević
Koncertna dvorana Vatroslava Lisinskog, Zagreb, 24.1.2013
broadcast live on Croatian Radio HR3

http://www.mediafire.com/?q1ad2dcmi5d1f4a (Fantasia)
http://www.mediafire.com/?3ey96iutbxzm25p (Illusione - Finale)

This is yet another powerful piece by Šulek, a gripping one too, I would say, at once one of his most overtly neo-Baroque and late-Romantic, one of his most unabashedly dramatic, with echoes from Symphony No. 6 and others, and one of the most "modern-sounding" in places, due to his characteristic harmonic processes. The live performance, given tonight in Zagreb, is also quite splendid. The performers clearly believe in this music, which demands nothing short of the strongest concentration and commitment.

Bruno Bjelinski  (1909-1992)

Scherzando  (1948)

Scherzando is the second movement of Bjelinski's Divertimento. This was the
only movement available. The cheerfulness and optimism of this movement is characteristic
of the creative works of this composer.
