I should point out that I seem to have at least five and possibly six versions of the Fricker Symphony No.1:

Louisville Orchestra (Robert Whitney) (LP)

Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra(Max Rudolf)   (1959)

New Philharmonia Orchestra(Sir Charles Mackerras) (1966)

B.B.C. Northern Symphony Orchestra(Bryden Thomson)

Louisville Orchestra(Jorge Mester)   (This may be the Whitney-I shall need to check!)

B.B.C. Scottish Symphony Orchestra(Martyn Brabbins) (1995)

I've got to say, much as I enjoyed Hoddinott's Fourth,I do prefer Fricker. It's just a change for a Hoddinott composition to appeal to me!! I like Daniel Jones,Grace Williams and William Mathias. I've listened to their music and cd over the years, but Hoddinott has always left me cold. After a couple of hours away from these composers it's Fricker I want to return to the most, not Hoddinott. Not being a musician or being possessed of a particularly analytical mind, all I can say is that it's a question of depth, ie it's the Fricker that resonates in my mind NOT Hoddinott!!
Oh well, that's just me! :( ;D Not knocking Hoddinott!!

Looking over all the Naxos releases this month, rather a good haul as well as the Fricker. This, for instance:
