Let's not forget from 2016 the truly magnificent rendering of Havergal Brian's gargantuan Symphony No.2 by Martyn Brabbins and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra with its awesome funeral march finale :)

Yes,absolutely magnificent. I've known the work for nigh on thirty years, and it has always been a favourite HB symphony......although the Marco Polo rendition nearly put me off, after my old cassette recording got 'mangled' up,and that was all I had for a while! The Brabbins recording is superb in every respect. It makes you realise what a tremendous symphony this is. I just love everything about it. I actually prefer it to the Gothic. If there was any justice in this world,a recording of Brian's truly wonderful (imho) third symphony would be mandatory from this team. Fantastic!!

One that springs to mind. The Lyrita recording of Bernard van Dieren's Chinese Symphony. I've been waiting for a recording ever since I first read about this composer in an old yellowing Pelican paperback, and a few other places, since. His name seems to crop up now and again........and now here is a cd recording oif his most 'celebrated' (although, maybe that's not the right word) work. Yes,it meanders a bit;but it has an odd atmosphere which really appeals to me. It makes me think more of late Scott than Delius really;but it also has a distinct soundworld of it's own. Whoever those people were who said that it wasn't worth recording were, imo, wrong. I also enjoyed the two shorter pieces, and I hope that the Lyrita cd will encourage more recordings of his music. Nice choice of artwork too!

It is a wonderful work and a great performance BUT following along with Malcolm MacDonald's essay, you realise that some orchestral detail is not captured in the recording, which actually is audible in the Marco Polo CD.

My favorite purchase was the two-CD set from Palazetto Bru Zane of the music of Marie Jaëll, had heard the piano concertos before but the Legend des Ours and Cello Concerto were happy new-to-hear pieces. More!

Maximilian Steimberg and Hubert Clifford from dutton surely
Which Steinberg will be recorded? My understanding-from a previous post-is that it will be the Symphony No.4 "Turksib". Hello - is there a calendar for Dutton's 2017 releases? I would be interested to know when the Steinberg will be released.

Hello - does anyone know anything more about the possible release by Dutton of Steinberg's 4th symphony ("Turksib") mentioned above in this thread?

Okay. Because my favourite 2016 purchase WAS a Dutton CD, with the premiere of John Veale's Symphony No. 2 (1965):
|
… music is not only an `entertainment’, nor a mere luxury, but a necessity of the spiritual if not of the physical life, an opening of those magic casements through which we can catch a glimpse of that country where ultimate reality will be found. RVW, 1948
