For some mysterious reason I have largely ignored the music of Paul Juon to date. I am aware that there are now a number of cds of his music which I must start to investiogate :)

I only know his chamber music, which I find rather good. I'm aware that his music has been disparaged on that other site whose name I don't recall, but that hardly counts for much.

I was stupidly careless in originally using the phrase "totally ignored" in relation to Juon's music. I had in fact four works of his in my collection. One of these is "Mysteries" for cello and orchestra (1928). Listening to it again-after a long gap since I last did so-reminded me why I had rather "largely ignored" his music. It is very beautiful and extremely pleasant but falls into that category of romantic music I am less attracted to. I tried the Little Symphony for string orchestra(1928) but I am afraid that I found it too somewhat anodyne despite its undoubted richness of romantic expression. The final work I listened to was the Concertante Episodes for Violin, Cello, Piano and orchestra. That work made slightly more of an impression on me.....but not enough to really grab my attention. I can fully understand the attractions of the music but it is not really for me :(

I shall however probably buy the forthcoming cpo cd to see if I am indeed missing something. I also suspect that Juon fell into a bit of a gap between Russian and Swiss composers and thereby unfortunately convinced me that I had completely overlooked him. I hadn't.....he had just not registered sufficiently strongly.

Among the orchestral works of Juon I have heard, his Episodes Concertants are by far the best.
There are also some fascinating videos of it on YouTube with the Pittsburgh Trio performing it in Russia.

But in general, Juon is at his best in his chamber works, in particular his compositions for piano trio.

The first piano trio, first piano quintet and chamber symphony are superb, in my opinion. Brilliant late romantic works full of good old 'Russian' melodies. Some of his later works, particularly the three small string orchestra works are, sadly, far less memorable.
