For some mysterious reason I have largely ignored the music of Paul Juon to date. I am aware that there are now a number of cds of his music which I must start to investiogate :)
I was stupidly careless in originally using the phrase "totally ignored" in relation to Juon's music. I had in fact four works of his in my collection. One of these is "Mysteries" for cello and orchestra (1928). Listening to it again-after a long gap since I last did so-reminded me why I had rather "largely ignored" his music. It is very beautiful and extremely pleasant but falls into that category of romantic music I am less attracted to. I tried the Little Symphony for string orchestra(1928) but I am afraid that I found it too somewhat anodyne despite its undoubted richness of romantic expression. The final work I listened to was the Concertante Episodes for Violin, Cello, Piano and orchestra. That work made slightly more of an impression on me.....but not enough to really grab my attention. I can fully understand the attractions of the music but it is not really for me :(
I shall however probably buy the forthcoming cpo cd to see if I am indeed missing something. I also suspect that Juon fell into a bit of a gap between Russian and Swiss composers and thereby unfortunately convinced me that I had completely overlooked him. I hadn't.....he had just not registered sufficiently strongly.
