Kokkonen was in the 1960s one of the international best known Finnish composers.
He was the first symphonist elected to the Academy of Finland and served as chairman of the Finnish Society of Composers. He was also a professor at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and as such the teacher of a.o. Rautavaara.
His quartet starts with a contemplative Passacaglia, followed by a charming Intermezzo. It is followed by a dramatic Allegro vivace and close by a serene Epilogo.
May be this quartet show best that the composer has a perfect feeling for writing for string instruments.Usko Meriläinen (1930-2004) -

In this work Meriläinen passed clearly the experimental stage. The work won the piano division of the Camden Festival from 1967 (Feb 22nd). The work was played by the young South-African pianist who also plays here.
