A very welcome release of songs by Sir Frederic Cowen (1852-1935) is forthcoming on the Sheva label -

I have been unable to find a track-listing, but hope that the focus will be on the composer's 'art songs' rather than drawing-room ballads.

This enterprising disc comes at an opportune time when Cowen's substantial Symphony No.5 (1887) has just been recorded by the BBC Concert Orchestra under John Andrews for future issue on the EM label.

Wow, two pieces of wonderful news! Cowen is so very elusive. And rather like Holbrooke, one wonders how much attention he deserves, but we won't know until we hear him!
