I'm thinking the intent of the piece is pure sarcasm.

The worst music I have ever heard is largely unheard as I do not listen much much of it play.
Hate to name names, but there are some things by Cage, Crumb, Boulez and Xenaxis that come to my mind.
But Xenaxis is sometimes so pungent the pain can be addictive if in small doses. And I'm fairly sure that is
what the composer intended.

Never heard of Xenaxis; can you please tell us something about him/her? The name sounds to me somewhat similar to that of a great Greek composer of the past century.

Believe as you will or may, but I've never heard of him/her either! - and I remain none the wiser as to which axis this Xen is/was on.

That said, the amusing irony of this post appearing in the list on the front page as The Worst Piece Of Classical Music Ever Written by ahinton is far from lost on me...

I'm sure we can all list some pieces of music that, as an individual, he considers dreadfully bad and worthy of consideration as the "worst" composition ever written.

But in the end, it is no different from the selection of the "best" work ever written. In the end, it is one person's opinion based on that person's personal preferences. It is entirely subjective.

In either case, "best" or "worst," here are no specifications, no measurable or normative standards, by which an objective selection can be made.

What it boils down to for anyone is "in my opinion, here is the piece of music I dislike more than any other." As for the Jenkins "Peacemakers" piece, I can imagine it putting me to sleep. But I once got up and walked out on a piece that was so irritating to me that I couldn't stand to sit there listening to it. I have also heard recordings of similarly ugly ( ** TO ME **) works that I had to turn off or destroy my stereo equipment. So, the Jenkins piece, dreadful as it is, would not be in my top 10.

Ture Rangstrom's First Symphony (what an empty, banal writing).

Ture Rangstrom's First Symphony (what an empty, banal writing).

Really!? Well, it's probably his weakest symphony, but the worst piece of classical music ever written?! :o

Some of the worst pieces/composers I've ever heard:

pretty much anything by Tavener (but The Protecting Veil is okay)
Strauss: Ein Heldenleben (the definition of empty and banal!)
Stefan Wolpe's Symphony
anything by Stockhausen, Boulez, Xenakis, or Cage

I'm sure there are a lot of third-tier, propagandistic Soviet works out there that I haven't heard which would qualify! ;)

One of the worst piece written, for me anyhow. But Strauss' "A Hero's Life" is totally in a different league (not as elevated as the Alpine Symphony, but never dull).

Really?  I've never seen Messiaen's name spelt that way before  ;)

The only -itch Xenaxis (sic) had any dealings with was a Trypt-itch, I believe.

Tch tch, this is mere point-scoring. You may not like Ein Heldenleben; I don't care for it myself - but the worst piece ever written? Come, Come!

Not when there are such outstanding works as George Tolhurst's oratorio Ruth.

I would greatly appreciate more information on "Ruth". I know the archive recording which was re-orchestrated by Anthony Hopkins.
Did he really just orchestrate it or did he include a few own inspirations?
Can it be that he is actually the composer? A fake?
There are a few strange things going on in this piece which arise serious doubts about 1864 as the (latest) year of composition. ;)
