Karelia is now divided. Stalin took a big chunk for himself in 1940. 90% of all Karelians re-located to the Finnish side.
After the disintegration of the Soviet Union, the Russian area was so devastated and polluted the Finns said "Keep it."
So at this point there a Russian Karelia and a Finnish Karelia.

a good book to read is the "The Winter War"  .. Karelia was given to Stalin as a concession after the 1939-1940 War.

Medieval Russian churches at Kizhi, Karelia.

No sign of the alleged pollution, ahem.
