Indeed Mr. H. I too have been thinking about Bach's glorious trumpets.

However, Bach used oboes almost continuously - they invariably double the violin lines. Some of the most poignant and tragic moments at the heart of his Passions are accompanied by obbligato lines for the oboe d'amore.
